If you want to destroy my sweater...

The black cable-knit duster had seen better days. It was a cheap acrylic cardigan that I kept in my desk drawer for when it was cold. It was always cold. So, like a ratty old bathroom, I drug this duster around my office. pilled and frayed, the belt long gone, it was black and long and warm. That was, after all, the purpose. Had my Mother been wrong about everything not being a fashion show? But now, armed with a little Christmas money, I purchased a new sweater. Black, to be sure, and cabled as well. It was also cheap and acrylic but thick and warm. The belt stitched onto the side. Buttons! My old duster had no buttons. Already an upgrade. It had a shawl collar instead of a hood but really, outside beckoning for Obi Wan Kenobi (he's my only hope) how often did I need to wear a hood indoors? This was a time for renewal, after all. 2008? I'm so over you.

Maybe I should have named her Bella...

DH thinks that the girl looks like Kristin Stewart from the Twilight movie but that is strictly unintentional. I based her off of one of the first paintings I ever did but using a chiaroscuro technique. Well, I'm no Caravaggio so it's a kiwiscurro technique at best.

The Stranger

Just so you don't think I haven't been working during this holiday season, meet The Stranger. A story on The Moth podcast inspired the background china cabinet of acid green crystal.
If you haven't checked out The Moth, do so.

Japanese Cute Shirt - the remix

A new design

So, tell me...is this new design full of win or made of fail?

still working on those pendants

I'm so slow about getting out a new product. I'm just hesitant that perfection is expected. you know what I mean?

Upon request by my little dumpling, I made this anime version of her for her grand re-decoration. It's not really my strong suit but I think it turned out pretty cute.

Before and after

I gave one of my old paintings a make-over last night while watching WKRP in Cincinati (Turkey's Away). I think it shows the kind of progress I've made artistically when you compare the two.

The rules:* Mention the rules on your blog.* Tell six quirky yet boring, unspectacular details about yourself.* Tag six others* Go to each person’s blog and leave a comment that lets them know they are tagged.
Quirky yet boring eh?

1. I listen to copious amounts of NPR.
2. I read Wikipedia for fun
3. I have a boomerang shaped birthmark on my right leg
4. I've never left the country
5. I have a palmaris longus muscle.
How do you like them apples?
Now, to tag.....

Riding on the Metro

She reminds me of the Berlin song The Metro from back in the 80s. I should have given her an empty glass.
So, did I achieve the rain on window effect that I was going for? Or does it look like a melting city?

The Internal Circus

I present to you The Internal Circus. I'm starting a series about the imaginary hoops through which we think we need to jump on a daily basis.

The concept is that we oppress ourselves with all the pointless crap that we think we need.

Pendants a-plenty

My first...well, second really, batch of scrabble tile pendants. Like mini works of art hanging from your neck.

yay. I love them but they are kind of like my babies to begin with so I'm kind of biased like that. You know how I do.

Three Guesses

Can you guess what I'm working on? hmmmm.
That's right, Empty Envelope, it's scrabble tile pendants. Although that taj mahal thing is tempting...hmmm.

A revision of vision

I revised this older piece with a little more detail and cleaner lines.

What do you think? I like it.

Saturday, November 08, 2008

Variations on a theme...as always. after I did Antionette, I wanted to push the concept a little further so I created Reinette. Bigger hair, more ornate and my lovely white eye patch. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Do I Need an Agent?

So, if a gal wanted to get into the illustration market, should that gal get an agent? How does that work? Anyone have an agent? Has anyone done any commercial illustration?

oh, hai, David Cook....what are you doing here? being awesome? I thought as much.

autumnal images

I seem to be stuck on autumnal imagery. Do her teeth look a little 'bucky' to you?

Illustration Friday - Repair

It wasn't an ideal fix...but it would have to do for now. In honor of 'repair', I made a temporary fix for an unplanned eviction.

Bird Brain

What do you do when a bird wants to make your hair its home? If you are Carrie Bradshaw, you'd continue to wear it with a veil.

An Unexpected Perch

Okay, my husband and daughter both think that the angles of her face and neck are weird. I don't see it. Do you see it?

Eta: I altered the picture in photoshop and the hub seems to think it makes all the difference. What do you think?

Windy a concept piece

I decided to add an additional piece to 'Windy' to give her some more substance. To the left, you can see that she will match up to include her wonderful red coat and plaid scarf. Seriously, I love her coat.
What do you think?

Monday, October 13, 2008

In keeping with my natural elements theme of late, I created a respresentation of wind. At least, I think I did. Thus, Windy was born. She's all autumnal and leafy, too, which is a bonus.

Illustration Friday - Strings

...and the theme was strings.

Midnight's child wears butterflies and wreathes of fireflies.

In keeping with my recent fascination with the natural world...and my abiding love of fireflies...I imaginated this little gal.

What if I'm a mermaid...

first wood and then water, I think I must be tuning into the elements of the Earth.

Entitled 'what if I'm a mermaid' which is a line from a Tori Amos song which has been worming through my head for two days now.

Illustration Friday - Sugary

This friday's theme is 'sugary' so I thought of dear Reiko, following the fireflies to their hidden midnight candy tree.

I hope she has enough candy bouquet for everyone.
My daughter wanted to add her own piece on the Sugary theme so meet The Sugar King. How sweet.

Strange Folk

The strange folk fest was wicked fun. Much coin was made. Met some strange folk. A good time was had by all. However, it has made me face some hard truths about my work. I think I'm going to start redirecting my energies back into cute characters on t-shirts and buttons, etc. Of course, that doesn't mean that I won't be painting anymore....

Rooted is my latest piece in a new series.

Strange Folk

All right, cuties, I'll be heading to Strange Folk in O'Fallon this weekend. This is my second year at the show and I'm hoping that it will be even better. In addition to my usual fair, I'll be bringing some 'I heart Punk' onesies, some ninja bibs, a boatload of original artwork and t-shirts, t-shirts, t-shirts.
I'll post pics and report back on Sunday night.

They used to call her Kitten

They still do but they don't mean it anymore.

the birth of a notion

The clever and wonderful Ellia over at Green Bean Baby gave me an idea. I'm going to work on a portrait series, very illustration-y, and turn them into ACEO-like cards. You know, like from a wonderful old Milton Bradley game. So, to go along with Sweet Bernadette, meet Clever Camile.

Camile is looking for a husband. I hope it's not yours. :)

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

I think I'll call her....

Bernadette. Doesn't she remind you of Bernadette Peters? She does to me. Part of my 'Dames' series, she looks to me like she's waiting for a hot air balloon ride from a spring carnival.

Pink or Green...who can decide?

So, I saw this insane stacked braid hair do in a fashion layout and was inspired to make this beautiful geisha with the lopsided braid hive. They are both composed of the same colors except for the metallics.

Stop clammoring....it's finally here!

Finally, I'm offering some prints through deviantart.com (until I get my new printer). So now, you can have this print (and several others) for your very own.

I love this one. It's about letting go of the past to soar to new heights. Kind of a metaphor for womanhood, don't you think?

Monday, September 08, 2008

better pics

Better pictures of yesterday's pieces.

I just love these.

Sunday, September 07, 2008

Hang in there...I'm going someplace with this

This is a lousy pic so consider it a sneak peek. Another variation on my Japanese girls series in two colorways.
One has a 'sky like' background and the other a flat color surface.
I'll post some better pics tomorrow but I'm really liking the pattern effect with the metallic paints.
I think I like this more than having the patterns in the corners.

I love my artwork. Others will love it, too.

I'm experimenting with making some glass pendants of my artwork. So far so good.

Maybe I should give one away as a test model?

selfish like shellfish

Here she is. This is a piece I've been working on (off and on) to keep for myself. Here she is hanging over my red couch.

I love the patterns of origami paper and the mixing and matching of those patterns. It almost has a lacey look.

The bird was then conceived as a companion piece for this one. I then began to think about making off-setting companion birds for other of my japanese girl pieces.

So much inspiration and so little time.

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

a companion piece

I'm currently working on a large piece for my own living room and was inspired to create a companion piece....a satellite, if you will. I'm not ready to show off the big piece yet but here is the companion.

I've been fascinated with origami paper patterns lately.

dontcha love her madly?

Tired of this series yet? Good cuz I'm not. Although, I am thinking of moving from the more traditional to the more harajuku japanese girl.
I spent this weekend getting sunburned at a Japanese Festival, watching the FRUiT girls, the harajuku, the cosplay....so much fashion inspiration from Japan.
